  • Provide a dynamic interprofessional dental hygiene curriculum that integrates biomedical, clinical and behavioral sciences and is in partnership with the dental curriculum.
  • Maintain admission policies to ensure admission of a qualified and diverse student body
  • Maintain baccalaureate degree programs to support and encourage lifelong learning
  • Provide individualized patient-centered comprehensive dental hygiene care
  • Participate in interprofessional community health promotion and service
  • Provide service to the dental hygiene alumni to foster mutual advancement and lifelong learning

The Dental Hygiene programs at NYU Dentistry provide extraordinary clinical and academic opportunities for students interested in preventive oral healthcare and the promotion of good health. A key member of the healthcare team, the dental hygienist works together with dental professionals to meet the oral health needs of patients and thereby improve patients' quality of life.

The Department of Dental Hygiene and Dental Assisting houses two degree programs, both of which prepare students for careers in dental hygiene: Bachelor of Science (BS) in Dental Hygiene and Associate in Applied Science (AAS) in Dental Hygiene. Students have the option to pursue these degree programs through a number of flexible curriculum plans, including the BS four-year plan, BS Degree Completion plan, the AAS Fast Track, and the AAS Advanced Standing curriculum, among others.

In addition, the department offers a unique program as a Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene with a Dental Science Concentration.

Dental hygiene program graduates have opportunities to work in various areas in the dental hygiene field. Many graduates work in clinical practice at dental offices and community clinics with the AAS degree. For those with a passion for dental hygiene who are interested in opportunities outside of clinical practice, there are many career paths available in education, public health, research, administration, and corporate business with the BSDH degree.

Attending the only dental hygiene program housed within a dental college in the state of New York, Dental Hygiene students at the NYU Dentistry have the unique opportunity to work in integrated clinical settings alongside DDS students as well as faculty members from dental hygiene, dentistry and specialty areas -- gaining invaluable experiences as they learn the practice of dental hygiene while treating a highly diverse patient population. Academic excellence and clinical expertise are further supported by rotations through specialty areas (orthodontics, periodontics, prosthodontics, implant dentistry, pediatric dentistry and oral health center for people with disabilities), preparing students through a comprehensive and challenging education. NYU Dentistry supports numerous outreaches which also adds to the learning experiences and employment opportunities.

NYU College of Dentistry's campus spans three buildings along First Avenue in Manhattan — from East 24th Street to East 26th Street — in the heart of the NYU health sciences corridor. The clinical treatment areas of the NYU Dental Center are in the connected Schwartz and Weissman buildings, at 345 E. 24th Street and 421 First Avenue, respectively.

The NYU Interprofessional Building at 433 First Avenue houses the NYU Dentistry Student Services suite, the Learning Commons, the Departments of Biomaterials and of Epidemiology & Health Promotion, several classrooms, and casual gathering spaces. The NYU Meyers College of Nursing and the NYU Tandon Bioengineering Institute are also housed in the Interprofessional Building.

Mandatory Vaccinations, Boosters, and Records Upload

All members of the NYU community — students, faculty, employees, vendors, affiliates, and campus visitors — are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19, to upload proof of their vaccination to NYU's portal, and to have that vaccination documentation accepted by NYU.

NYU Dentistry also must abide by the New York State Department of Health (DOH) regulations "Prevention of COVID-19 Transmission by Covered Entities" (10 NYCRR 2.61). Please note: As of January 13, 2023, the information regarding the applicability and scope of DOH regulations is subject to change, as the regulations are subject to ongoing litigation between the state of New York and a non-NYU party. NYU is monitoring the status of the regulations and this page will be updated prior to matriculation of currently admitted students.
