Findings Could Have Implications for Systemic as Well as Bone Conditions
In a new study published in November in Scientific Reports, New York University College of Dentistry (NYU Dentistry) researchers investigating the catabolic effect of parathyroid hormone (PTH) in hyperparathyroidism (HPT) showed, for the first time, that monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1) is required for catabolic responses to PTH. HTP is a condition in which an abnormally high concentration of PTH in the blood accelerates bone loss.

The grants will support research to develop improved materials for restorative dentistry that are both resilient and aesthetically pleasing. Yu Zhang, PhD, associate professor of biomaterials at NYU Dentistry, will lead the two projects.

Pearls are among nature's most beautiful creations, and have been treasured for countless centuries. Beneath one's iridescent surface lies a tough and resilient structure made of intricately arranged tiles of calcium carbonate organized by a crew of proteins that guide its formation and repair.
While it is known that pearls are made of calcium carbonate with an organic matrix core, the role of the proteins modulating the organization of these crystals has, until recently, been unclear.

Study to Focus On Bronx School-Based Cavity Prevention Dental Programs
A research team at New York University College of Dentistry (NYU Dentistry) has been approved for a $13.3 million funding award by the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) to study cavity prevention, quality of life, and school performance.
NYU Dentistry's Richard Niederman, DMD, and Ryan Richard Ruff, MPH, PhD, will lead the five-year study comparing the effectiveness of two cavity-prevention techniques — a "simple" treatment of topical silver and fluoride, and a "complex" treatment of traditional sealants and fluoride. The study will be conducted in elementary schools in the Bronx, an area with a scarcity of dental care providers and clinics.

Researchers at NYU Dentistry's Bluestone Center for Clinical Research have been awarded a two-year National Institutes of Health (NIH) grant to develop biomarkers for tongue cancer, a subset of oral cancers that often are deadly.
"We are investigating the tongue microbiome, which is the bacterial community on the tongue," said Donna Albertson, PhD, grant co-principal investigator, a professor in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at NYU Dentistry, and an investigator at the Bluestone Center for Clinical Research.

Dr. Xin Li and Team Identify Promising Target to Protect Bone in Patients with Diabetes

Researchers at the College have described a new target that may open the door to developing therapies for preventing bone fractures in people with type 2 diabetes. In a study published in Nature Communications, the investigators report that hyperglycemic mice (or mice with type 2 diabetes) have a 24-fold higher accumulation of succinate, an intermediate metabolite, in the metabolic pathways of their bone marrow stromal cells.

The Osteo Science Foundation has awarded one of two inaugural Philip J. Boyne Junior Faculty Awards to Ismael Khouly, DDS, MS, PhD, associate director of periodontology and implant dentistry at the NYU Bluestone Center for Clinical Research and clinical assistant professor of oral and maxillofacial surgery at the NYU College of Dentistry. The award marks the first time that an NYU investigator has been funded by the Osteo Science Foundation, whose mission is to advance hard and soft tissue regeneration, with a focus on oral, cranial, and maxillofacial surgery in the United States and Canada. Dr. Khouly's research has the potential to significantly reduce post-extraction resorption problems that may impair the success of prosthetic restoration and/or implant placement in the posterior maxilla. Drs. Heyman and Slep’s study will test and evaluate three models for reviewing and determining maltreatment (domestic and child abuse) cases among Army personnel and their families through a multifaceted analysis drawing from multiple sources of data, feedback, and information.

Rheonix, Inc., a developer of fully automated molecular testing solutions, in collaboration with New York University College of Dentistry, has received an administrative supplement of $656,414 to an existing Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase I/II Fast-track grant from the National Institute of Dental & Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), to develop a rapid diagnostic for Zika virus infection. The grant will allow the Rheonix/NYU team to pursue the development of a fully automated screening and self-confirming assay that will simultaneously detect and confirm the Zika virus presence in a single, small sample of saliva or blood specimen.

The lead story (basic science category) on the NIDA (National Institute of Drug Abuse) Notes website for March 2016 features a collaborative study by 16 investigators including Dr. Bradley Aouizerat, professor of oral and maxillofacial surgery and deputy director of the Bluestone Center for Clinical Research. The study, "Novel Genetic Locus Implicated for HIV-1 Acquisition with Putative Regulatory Links to HIV Replication and Infectivity: A Genome-Wide Association Study," published March 18, 2015, in PLOS One, identified a gene variant that appears to partially shield people whose behaviors entail high risk for exposure to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) from being infected. According to NIDA Notes, the finding could point a way to medications that prevent HIV that has entered the body from establishing infection.

A new study by basic science researchers in the Department of Basic Science and Craniofacial Biology sought to understand how gene expression is initiated in the notochord, the evolutionary and developmental precursor of the backbone. The notochord is an axial structure that provides support and patterning signals essential for development in all chordate embryos, including humans.
"A main challenge of modern biology is to understand how specific constellations of genes are switched on in different cells to give rise to distinct tissues," says lead author Dr. Anna Di Gregorio, associate professor in the Department of Basic Science and Craniofacial Biology at NYU Dentistry. Chronic pain affects more than 50 million adults in the U.S. Upwards of 9 out of 10 cancer patients suffer from pain, with oral cancer ranked consistently as one of the most painful cancers. This chronic pain management represents a major socioeconomic and clinical challenge because the side effects of existing treatments — mainly prescribing opioids — greatly limit their effectiveness, especially over time.
Dr. Brian Schmidt and Dr. Igor Spigelman will focus on the therapeutic utility of recently developed synthetic cannabinoids which work to relieve the chronic inflammation and neuropathic pain symptoms of oral cancer without "getting high." READ MORE >>>
NYU Study Links Life's Milestones to a Non-Circadian Biological Rhythm in Teeth

The circadian rhythm, or "daily biological clock," controls much of an organism’s regular pace of development, and this growth paradigm has been the focus of intense molecular, cellular, pharmacological, and behavioral, research for decades. But then, why do rats mature faster than humans?
"It is impossible to explain enormous variations in age at maturity and other developmental milestones just by looking at differences in this daily rhythm," said Dr. Timothy Bromage, professor of Biomaterials and of Basic Science & Craniofacial Biology at NYU College of Dentistry.
