Dr. Rose Amable

Dr. Rose Amable, clinical assistant professor of pediatric dentistry, on advising the first place winner, Itzel Gutierrez, Class of 2023, in the 2022 Nuestros Ninos (Our Children) Competition, a national competition among all U.S. dental schools. The competition, supported by Colgate Oral Pharmaceuticals and the Hispanic Dental Association, calls for Hispanic Student Dental Association (HSDA) chapters to present a comprehensive pediatric dental case that addresses health care issues, prevention, and oral care strategies for Hispanic children. NYU’s HSDA chapter’s winning case presentation was titled "Down Syndrome: Increasing Access to Pediatric Dental Care with the use of Social Stories and Visual Scheduling." Ms. Gutierrez received a $5,000 first-place award and NYU’s HSDA chapter received $500. This is the third year in which NYU’s HSDA chapter has won the first place award in this competition.

Dr. Habib Benzian, research professor of epidemiology & health promotion and co-director of the WHO Collaborating Center for Quality-improvement, Evidence-based Dentistry (QED WHO CC), on co-editing the first WHO Global Oral Health Status Report; presenting keynote remarks at the UCSF School of Dentistry’s 2023 Global Oral Health Symposium, “Global Oral Health Today and Moving Forward: Reflections on the World Health Organization Global Oral Health Status Report”; and coauthoing Pandemic Considerations on Essential Oral Health Care,” with Dr. Eugenio Beltran, adjunct professor of epidemiology & health promotion and co-director of the QED WHO CC, and Dr. Richard Niederman, professor of epidemiology & health promotion. The article is cited among the top 50 papers on oral health and COVID-19 in an altmetric analysis published in the Journal of Oral Biology and Craniofacial Research. Added kudos to Drs. Dr. John Calamia

Dr. John Calamia, professor of cariology & comprehensive care, where he also serves as director of aesthetic dentistry, on being named the recipient of the New York County Dental Society's 2023 Henry Spenadel Award, which recognizes an individual or an organization for significant contributions to the advancement of the dental profession. Among his professional accomplishments, Dr. Calamia is recognized nationally and internationally as co-developer of etched laminate veneer technology.

Mr. Marco Damiani, CEO of AHRC (Advocacy, Humanity, Reimagination, Change) New York City, an advocacy organization for people who are neurodiverse, and a member of Dean Bertolami’s Dean’s Strategic Advisory Council, on receiving an inaugural Manhattan Power List award. Dr. Andrew Spielman

Dr. Andrew Spielman, professor of molecular pathobiology and director of NYU Dentistry’s Rare Books Library and Historical Archives, on receiving the Stephen H. Leeper Award for Teaching Excellence. The award is the highest honor presented by the Supreme Chapter of Omicron Kappa Upsilon, the national dental honor society. Additional kudos to Dr. Spielman on being awarded the Hayden-Harris Award, the highest honor bestowed by the American Academy of the History of Dentistry (AAHD) and on the release of the first 25 chapters of a comprehensive, digital, free, online Encyclopedia of the History of Dentistry. The encyclopedia is coauthored by Dr. Spielman and Dr. Judit Forrai, of the Institute of the History of Medicine and Social Medicine at Semmelweis University in Budapest, Hungary. It is the first encyclopedia of its kind.

  • Dr. Eduardo D. Rodriguez, ’92, Receives NYU Distinguished Alumni Award

    Eduardo D. Rodriguez, MD, DDS, a Class of 1992 graduate of NYU Dentistry and the Helen L. Kimmel Professor of Plastic Surgery and Chair of the Hansjörg Wyss Department of Plastic Surgery at NYU Langone Health, has received the 2023 Distinguished Alumni Award. This award is presented to a distinguished graduate of any school, college, or division of NYU who has demonstrated extraordinary achievement and/or service in their professional, vocational, social, or cultural endeavors, and who deserves acknowledgement as embodying the spirit of distinction that brings pride to the University.

    At NYU Langone Health, Dr. Rodriguez leads the Vascular Composite Allotransplantation (VCA) program, which encompasses face and limb transplantation. He has gained international recognition for his work, particularly in facial transplantation, which has made this procedure safer and more feasible for wounded veterans, civilians, and first responders. By his example, Eduardo Rodriguez represents the finest qualities of NYU Dentistry alumni—high levels of competence, deep compassion, and respect for every patient.

  • Dr. Amin Ayoub, Class of 1992, and adjunct clinical associate professor of cariology & comprehensive care and former president of the NYU Dentistry Alumni Association, on being reelected for a second three -year term as a member of the NYU Alumni Association Board of Directors.

  • Dr. Anthony Cuomo, Class of 1974, on being elected president of the New York State Dental Association.

  • Dr. Maxine Feinberg, Class of 1980, on being elected Chair of the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) at the annual meeting in August. As Chair, Dr. Feinberg leads a board of 33 members in collaborative peer review accreditation process to evaluate more than 1,400 dental and dental related education programs. Dr. Feinberg served as president of American Dental Association in 2014.

  • Dr. Jae Hyun Park, Advanced Education Program in Orthodontics, ’06, on his election as president-elect of the American Board of Orthodontics. Dr. Park is professor and chair of the Postgraduate Orthodontic Program at the Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral Health.
