Congratulations to
Susan Abraham, assistant to Executive Associate Dean Steven Donofrio, on being invited by the Swedish Bureau of Tourism to represent the United States at the First International Wood Sculpture Symposium held near Stockholm during June and July 2000. Susan’s sculpture, a bench carved out of pine trees, measures 14 feet long by three feet wide and is over eight feet tall. It was purchased by the Kristina Hotel and Conference Center in Stockholm to be used as outdoor art.
Dr. Saul Bahn,clinical professor of oral and maxillofacial surgery, on his election as chairman of the Faculty Council. Added kudos to Dr. Bahn on presenting a lecture entitled “Clinical Implications of Cyclooxygenase-2 (Cox-2) Specific Nsaids in Pain Management” at the 9th International Dental Congress on Modern Pain Control in Jerusalem.
Elyse Bloom, Director of Public Relations, on being installed as president of the Healthcare Public Relations and Marketing Society of Greater New York. She will serve until June 2001.
Dr. Esther K. Colchamiro, clinical professor of pediatric dentistry, on receiving Special Presidential Recognition at the annual meeting of the American Association of Public Health Dentistry (AAPHD).
Dr. A. Norman Cranin, Class of 1951, clinical professor of hospital dentistry, on being the guest of honor at the Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center’s Millennium Tribute Ball, where he received Brookdale’s highest honor, the Gold Medal.
Dr. Stan B.B. Dawkins, Class of 1963, associate professor of general dentistry and management science, on being appointed director of the Advanced Education Program in General Dentistry.
Dr. Neal Herman, Class of 1972, clinical professor of pediatric dentistry, on being elected vice president of the Faculty Council.
Dr. Stuart M. Hirsch, Class of 1971, formerly associate dean for clinical affairs, on his expanded responsibilities as associate dean for clinical and international affairs.
Dr. Ross Kerr, assistant professor of oral medicine and of diagnostic science and urgent care, on being elected secretary of the NYU Dentistry Faculty Council.

Dr. Maged G. Ayad, Class of 1992, clinical assistant professor of periodontics, on coauthoring “The Association of Basic Proline-rich Peptides for Human Parotid Gland Secretions with Caries Experience” for the Journal of Dental Research. Among Dr. Ayad’s coauthors was Dr. Lawrence A. Tabak, director of the National Institute for Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR).
Dr. Ira Gulker, Class of 1962, professor of prosthodontics, on coauthoring “A Modified Indirect Working Die Technique for Fabricating Provisional Restorations for Multiple Teeth” for Quintessence International.
Dr. Shiaw-Wei Chang, a first-year student in the Advanced Education Program in Orthodontics, on coauthoring “Choosing a Camera for the Orthodontic Practice” for Orthodontic Products. Dr. Chang’s coauthor was Dr. Ilya Lipkin, also a first-year student in the Advanced Education Program in Orthodontics.
Dr. Gary R. Goldstein, Class of 1969, professor of prosthodontics and director of the Advanced Education Program in Prosthodontics, on coauthoring “Evidence-Based Dentistry Series” for the Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry.
Dr. Ira Newman, associate professor of general dentistry and management science and of prosthodontics, on coauthoring “Retention of a Core Material Supported by Three Post Head Designs” for the Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry.
Dr. Francis F. Tung, assistant professor of prosthodontics, on coauthoring “Microleakage of a Condensable Resin Composite: An In Vitro Investigation” for Quintessence International. Dr. Tung’s coauthors were Dr. Denise Estafan, assistant professor of biomaterials and biomimetics and of prosthodontics, and Dr. Warren Scherer, Class of 1963, professor of general dentistry and management science and of prosthodontics. Added congratulations to Dr. Scherer on his designation as associate head of the Division of Reconstructive and Comprehensive Care.
Dr. Mea A. Weinberg, clinical associate professor of periodontics, on coauthoring “An Overview of Delayed Passive Eruption” for the Compendium of Continuing Education in Dentistry. Dr. Weinberg’s coauthor was Dr. Robert N. Eskow, clinical professor of implant dentistry.
Dr. Malcolm B. Zola, Class of 1956, associate professor of oral and maxillofacial surgery, on authoring “Staged Sinus Augmentation and Implant Placement in a Patient with Osteogenesis Imperfecta” for the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
On the Lecture Circuit
Dr. Michael C. Alfano, dean of NYU Dentistry, on his presentation on developing and implementing a regional oral cancer screening program at the NIH Conference on Oral Cancer in June. Added kudos to Dean Alfano on receiving a Student Council Appreciation Award and a Class of 2000 Appreciation Award. Dean Alfano has also presented lectures at numerous alumni gatherings and professional societies in the area.
Dr. Rima Bachiman-Sehl, associate professor of epidemiology and health promotion, on presenting the following lectures: “Oral Health as You Age” at a seminar of the NYU Work-Life Wellness Education Series; “Oral Health and Aging” at the International Center for the Disabled (ICD) and the Stein Senior Center; and “Keeping Your Smile for a Lifetime” at the Grand Street Settlement Senior Center.
Dr. Gustavo D. Cruz, director of public health and health promotion, on copresenting a poster entitled “Oral Cancer Knowledge, Risk Factors and Characteristics of Participants in an Oral Cancer Screening Program in NYC” at the spring 2000 NYU Dentistry Research Day. Dr. Cruz’s copresenters included Dr. Racquel Z. LeGeros, Linkow Professor of Implant Dentistry and director of the Minority Oral Health Research Center, and Dr. D. Mercedes Franklin, director of the Office of Oral Health Programs and Policy of the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation.
Dr. Jan Levy, clinical assistant professor of general dentistry and management science, on presenting a talk about dental health to children at the Gillen Brewer School, which specializes in education for children with language and developmental delays.
Dr. Denise C. Murphy, clinical associate professor of general dentistry and management science, on presenting a poster entitled “Mobile Health Care: Critical Components in Design and Planning” at the Annual Session of the Association of Occupational Health Nurses. Dr. Murphy’s copresenters were Ilsa P. Klinghoffer, director of patient services; Jill B. Fernandez-Wilson, clinical associate professor of pediatric dentistry; and Dr. Linda R. Rosenberg, ’75, associate professor and chairman of the Department of Pediatric Dentistry. Also, in response to Dr. Murphy’s book Ergonomics and the Dental Care Worker (1998), she was interviewed and widely quoted in the February and March 2000 issues of Dental Products Review and in the April 2000 issue of Access, a publication of the American Dental Hygienists Association. Dr. Murphy’s book was also very favorably reviewed in the winter 2000 issue of Ergonomics and Design, an official publication of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society.
