Richard F. Mascola Scholarship Established

Dean Alfano has announced the establishment of the Richard F. Mascola Scholarship, a $100,000 scholarship for the four years of dental study at NYU. The announcement was made on October 22 at a gala tribute to Dr. Mascola hosted by NYU Dentistry on the occasion of his installation as President of the American Dental Association (ADA) and in recognition of his contributions to the dental profession and dental education. Dr. Mascola is a 1968 graduate of the NYU College of Dentistry.

Calling Dr. Mascola's achievements a point of immense pride for NYU Dentistry, Dean Alfano lauded Dr. Mascola's winning campaign theme, "It's Time to Control Our Destiny," and his devotion to bringing young people into organized dentistry. Said Dean Alfano, "Richard Mascola has consistently championed the highest ideals and ethical standards of dentistry for the public good, and we are privileged that he will lead our profession into the new millennium."

The Richard F. Mascola Scholarship will be presented in fall 2000 to an outstanding student in the entering class at NYU Dentistry who demonstrates the academic and leadership qualities that have characterized Dr. Mascola's entire professional life.

The event, held at Windows on the World in the World Trade Center in New York City, included opening remarks by Dr. Elliott Moskowitz, Class of 1972, and immediate past president of the NYU College of Dentistry Alumni Association, and a presentation to Dr. Mascola by Vera Tang, Class of 2000 and Region II Trustee of the American Student Dental Association (ASDA). Ms. Tang presented a plaque to Dr. Mascola on behalf of the NYU Dentistry chapter of ASDA in recognition of his tireless efforts to develop the chapter's membership from 50 student members in 1994 to a current total of 1,300 members. In further recognition of Dr. Mascola's contributions to the NYU Dentistry student body, Ms. Tang announced the creation in Dr. Mascola's name of a special award to be presented at the annual NYU Dentistry/ASDA awards banquet to a student demonstrating outstanding achievement and leadership skills in organized dentistry. In his acceptance remarks, Dr. Mascola praised recent initiatives at the College, and expressed confidence in NYU Dentistry's potential for the future.
