A Gift for the Future from Dr. Walter Askinas, '49
Dr. Walter Askinas, Class of 1949, has made a gift of $100,000 to help build the NYU College of Dentistry's future. His philanthropic vehicle is a bequest, which carries the benefit of an estate tax charitable deduction without diminishing his present assets.
In 1998, Dr. Askinas retired as executive dean and professor of restorative dentistry at Tufts University's School of Dental Medicine. A retired U.S. Air Force colonel, he joined the Tufts faculty in 1983 following a 30-year military career that included 25 years as a prosthodontist. He is a recipient of the Legion of Merit, the highest noncombat award given by the Air Force.
Dr. Askinas currently chairs the department of prosthodontics at the Nova Southeastern University School of Dental Medicine. Dean Alfano, who recently had the opportunity to meet Dr. Askinas and his wife, Mae, in Florida, said, "Walt and Mae are a wonderful couple. After decades of service to his profession as a clinician and a scholar, Walt continues to contribute his talents to Nova Southeastern University and financial resources to his alma mater, NYU Dentistry. What a terrific model for others to emulate!"
