A Major Gift from Dr. Larry Rosenthal, '72, Will Create the Nation's First Institute for Aesthetic Dentistry

A major gift from Dr. Larry Rosenthal, Class of 1972, will create the nation's first comprehensive program in an academic dental center to train dentists in the burgeoning field of cosmetic dentistry. The gift will support the establishment of a teaching and research institute named in Dr. Rosenthal's honor.

"Dr. Rosenthal is nationally recognized as a pioneer in the field of cosmetic dentistry. His generous and timely gift will help create a cadre of cosmetic dentists who can make his innovative techniques more broadly available to the general public," said Dean Alfano. "This gift is especially gratifying because Dr. Rosenthal is an alumnus of the College and has been associated with our Center for Continuing Dental Education for many years."

The Rosenthal Institute for Aesthetic Dentistry will provide a coordinated approach to the study of cosmetic dentistry and will enhance NYU's existing pre- and postdoctoral training in cosmetic dentistry. The institute will also foster research in cosmetic dentistry and moderate-cost patient care. It will be a unique program wholly dedicated to education and research in current and emerging techniques of cosmetic dentistry.

Dr. Rosenthal is a recognized leader in the field of cosmetic dentistry. Using minimally invasive dental techniques, including bonding, porcelain veneers, bleaching and reshaping, Dr. Rosenthal is credited with developing numerous new techniques for enhancing the appearance while maintaining the "individuality" of each of his patients. Dr. Rosenthal is an outspoken advocate for the importance of a natural-looking smile in enhancing overall appearance and self-confidence at any age.

"A beautiful, natural-looking smile is now within reach of all adults," explained Dr. Rosenthal. "It is my hope that the Rosenthal Institute for Aesthetic Dentistry at NYU will train a new generation of dentists who can assure that such care is widely available. In addition, I am confident that the institute can become a resource to develop and disseminate new and even better techniques for cosmetic dentistry in the years to come."
