Congratulations to
Jurak Ajdari, ‘03, on his selection as a 2000 Summer Dental Student Awardee at the NIDCR. Jurak was selected from an elite group of applicants from across the country to participate in an intensive, eight-week program. During this period, he formulated and conducted a scientific experiment relevant to oral pharyngeal cancer research, wrote his results as an abstract, and presented the results at the NIH poster session.
Dr. Michael C. Alfano, dean of NYU Dentistry, on chairing a March 2001 NIH Consensus Development Conference on Diagnosis and Management of Dental Caries Throughout Life. Added congratulations to Dean Alfano on receiving the 2000 Greater New York Academy of Prosthodontics Achievement Award, the Special Section Award of the New York Section of the American College of Dentists, and the Outstanding Editorial Award presented by the American Student Dental Association (ASDA), and on being featured as
the “Renaissance Man of Dentistry” in Healthstate, the magazine of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey.
Ruben Cohen’02, on his appointment as the ASDA- ADEA Student Commissioner on the ADA Commission on Dental Accreditation (CDA). Ruben is the only dental student in the U.S. to hold this position, which represents the interests of students of dentistry, dental hygiene, dental assisting, and dental laboratory technology at meetings of the CDA and its committees. Ruben will serve a two-year term.
Dr. Amy David, instructor in cariology and operative dentistry, on receiving a special commendation for excellence in teaching from the Class of 2003.
Ms. Jill Fernandez-Wilson, clinical associate professor of pediatric dentistry, on her appointment to the Secretary of the Navy’s 2001 National Naval Reserve Board, the Naval Reserve’s most prestigious policy board.
Dr. Ramon Galvan, ’93, clinical assistant professor of general dentistry and management science, on receiving a special commendation for excellence in teaching from the Class of 2003.
Dr. David Glotzer, ’58, clinical associate professor of cariology and operative dentistry, on receiving a special commendation for excellence in teaching from the Class of 2003.
Dr. Stuart M. Hirsch, ’71, formerly associate dean for clinical and international affairs, on his appointment as associate dean for international affairs and development.

Dr. Teresita Salgado, clinical assistant professor of biomaterials and biomimetics and of prosthodontics, on receiving a special commendation for excellence in teaching from the Class of 2003.
Michael J. Spink, Class of 2001, on winning third prize in the Sensodyne Dental Student Table Demonstrations at the Greater New York Dental Meeting.
Ms. Rita Startup, senior director of alumni development and special events, on presenting a series of lectures on the “Do’s and Don’ts of Alumni Relations” at the NYU Institute for Philanthropy.

Dr. Stuart Froum, ’70,
clinical professor of implant dentistry, on coauthoring “A Comparative Study Utilizing Open Flap Debridement With and Without Enamel Matrix Derivative in the Treatment of Periodontal Intrabony Defects: A 12-Month Reentry Study” for the Journal of Periodontology. Dr. Froum’s coauthors were Dr. Mea A. Weinberg, clinical associate professor of periodontics, Dr. Edwin Rosenberg, clinical professor of implant dentistry, and Dr. Dennis Tarnow, ’72, professor and chair of the Ashman Department of Implant Dentistry.
Dr. Laurance Jerrold, ’75, associate professor of orthodontics and director of the Advanced Education Program in Orthodontics, on coauthoring “Advertising, Commercialism, and Professionalism: A History of the Ethics of Advertising in Dentistry” for the Journal of the American College of Dentists. Dr. Jerrold’s coauthor was Dr. Hengameh Karkhanechi, a second-year student in the Advanced Education Program in Orthodontics.
Dr. Yon H. Lai, ’89, on
coauthoring Uprighting Molars with Twisted Superelastic Nickel Titanium Wires, for the Journal of Clinical Orthodontics. Dr. Lai’s coauthors included Dr. May Chu, Advanced Education Program in Orthodontics Class of 2000, and Dr. T.V. Vijayaraghavan, associate professor of biomaterials and biomimetics. Dr. Lai also coauthored “Eruption of Impacted Canines with an Australian Helical Archwire” for the Journal of Clinical Orthodontics. His coauthors included Dr. Christine Hauser, visiting assistant professor of orthodontics.
Dr. Todd H. Lerner, ’84, clinical associate professor of prosthodontics, on coauthoring “Quantitative Sensory Nerve Conduction Threshold (sNCT) Evaluation of the Trigeminal Nerve at the Mental Foramen Area”
for the Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry. Dr. Lerner’s coauthors were Dr. Gary R. Goldstein, ’69, professor of prosthodontics and director of the Advanced Education Program in Prosthodontics, and Dr. Eugene Hittelman, associate professor of epidemiology and health promotion.
Dr. Douglas E. Morse, assistant professor of epidemiology and health promotion, on coauthoring “Annual Per Capita Apparent Consumption of Tobacco Products in the United States: 1900-1990” for Preventive Medicine.
Dr. Denise C. Murphy,
clinical associate professor of general dentistry and management science, on coauthoring “Mobile Health Units: Design and Implementation Considerations” for the Journal of the American Association of Occupational Health Nurses. Dr. Murphy’s coauthors included Ilsa P. Klinghoffer, director of patient services, Jill Fernandez-Wilson, clinical associate professor of pediatric dentistry, and Dr. Linda R. Dr. Caroline Nup,
assistant professor of endodontics, on coauthoring “Quantitation of Catecholamines in Inflamed Human Dental Pulp by High-Performance Liquid Chromatography” for the Journal of Endodontics. Dr. Nup’s coauthors included Dr. Paul Rosenberg, ’62, professor and chairman of the Dr. I. N. and Sally Quartararo Department of Endodontics, director of the Advanced Education Program in Endodontics, and associate dean for postgraduate programs and Dr. Harald Linke, professor emeritus of microbiology. Added kudos to Dr. Rosenberg on delivering a lecture entitled “Future Strategies in Endodontics: Pain Control” at the 2001 annual session of the American Association of Endodontics in New Orleans.
Dr. Milton Palat, ’72,
associate professor of periodontics and director of predoctoral periodontics, on coauthoring “Desensitization: Strengths and Limitations of its Use in Dentistry for the Patient with Severe and Profound Mental Retardation” and “The Appropriate Use of Physical Restraint: Considerations” for The ASDC Journal of Dentistry for Children.
Dr. Jonathan A. Ship, professor of basic science and craniofacial biology and of oral medicine and director of the Bluestone Center for Clinical Research, on coauthoring “Management of Systemic Diseases and Chronic Impairments in Older Adults: Oral Health Considerations” for General Dentistry and “Determination of Variation of Stimulated Salivary Flow Rates” for the Journal of Dental Research.
Dr. David A. Sirois, associate professor of oral medicine and diagnostic science and urgent care, chairman of the Department of Oral Medicine, and acting chairman of the Department of Diagnostic Science and Urgent Care, on coauthoring “Valvular Heart Disease” and “Changing Oral Care Needs in the United States: The Continuing Need for Oral Medicine” for Oral Surgery, Medicine and Pathology.
Dr. Francis F. Tung,
assistant professor of prosthodontics, on coauthoring “Use of a Componer in Class V Restoration: A Microleakage Study” for Quintessance International. Dr. Tung’s coauthors were Dr. Denise Estafan, assistant professor of biomaterials and biomimetics and of prosthodontics, and Dr. Warren Scherer, ’63, professor of general dentistry and management science and of prosthodontics and associate head of the Division of Reconstructive and Comprehensive Care. Dr. Tung also coauthored “In vitro Microleakage Study of a Condensable and Flowable Composite Resin” for General Dentistry. His coauthors again included Dr. Estafan. Dr. Scherer was also interviewed recently by Teen Magazine about the effectiveness of whitening toothpastes and overnight gels.
