CE Course: The Power to Motivate - An Intensive Course in Motivational Interviewing
Why do some patients follow your home care regimen and others don’t?
Why do some people still smoke if they know it’s unhealthy?
What can you do to empower your patients to change?
Experience has shown that relying on a traditional patient education, where the practitioner provides advice and expects their patients to follow it, isn’t very effective. It often leaves practitioners feeling frustrated with both parties at an impasse. This paints a dismal picture, but there’s some hope. THERE IS MOTIVATIONAL INTERVIEWING! Motivational interviewing (MI) is an evidence-based counseling style that taps into patients’ own motivations to make positive changes in their lives. This course has been designed with a user-friendly approach to improve your knowledge and confidence with motivational interviewing. No previous experience with MI is necessary.
Upon completion of this course, the practitioner will be able to:
- Describe the main differences between traditional patient education and the MI approach aimed at behavior change
- Describe the spirit and guiding principles of MI
- Describe both ambivalence and elicit change talk, and learn how to use these to collaborate with patient’s to change their oral health behavior
- Utilize importance, readiness to change, and confidence rulers to help guide conversations about change
- Identify MI strategies that can be used in practice
- Apply strategies to engage in effective motivational interviewing
