Oral Surgery

This program is a one-year, full-time clinical and didactic course of study offered to dentists from countries other than the United States who seek to improve their clinical skills and knowledge in this discipline. The curriculum exposes students to a variety of oral surgery techniques and contemporary modalities of treatment. Students also undertake an integrated program of theoretical, clinical, and laboratory teaching.


Upon successful completion of the Advanced Program for International Dentists in Oral Surgery, participants will have an increased understanding of the biological basis of oral surgery theory and practice.


Participants treat a variety of patients under the close guidance of a diverse and experienced faculty comprised of top practitioners in the field of oral surgery and related areas.

Course Components

The course comprises of an array of lectures, seminars, conferences, and patient care/clinical experiences which further develop the participant's expertise. Participants will treat a wide variety of patients and will learn how to determine if a clinical situation requires consultation with other specialties.

Core competencies obtained during this course are:

  • Extraction of teeth & retained roots/pathology
  • Management of associated complications including oro-antral fistula
  • Management of odontogenic and other oral infections
  • Management of impacted teeth
  • Management of patients with complex medical history requiring multi-disciplinary participation.
  • Peri-radicular surgery
  • Dentoalveolar surgery in relation to orthodontic treatment
  • Intraoral and labial biopsy techniques
  • Appropriate pain and anxiety control including the administration of standard conscious sedation techniques
  • Introduction to implant dentistry.

Participants will develop skills in assessment and evaluation needed to explore literature and current research, and they will be prepared to appreciate the role of new technology in oral surgery. There are opportunities to participate in elective experiences such as teaching, research, and society meetings. Ample time is made available for these and other individual student interests.


Dr. Huzefa Talib

Dr. Huzefa Talib, BDS, MFDRCSI, FFDRCSI (OSOM), DICOI, received his Bachelor of Dental Surgery degree in July 1998 from the University of Pune in India. He maintained private practices in Pune, India (1999-2001), Sharjah, UAE (2002-2004), and Dubai, UAE (2004-2007). Dr. Talib graduated from the Advanced Program in Oral Surgery for International Dentists/Royal College of Surgeons (RCSI) in 2010, and passed the MFD and FFD in 2009 and 2010, respectively. He is also a member of the Faculty of Dentistry of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. Dr. Talib is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, and is Programl Director of the Advanced Programs for International Dentists in Oral Surgery/RCSI (Oral Surgery with Oral Medicine).
