Biography

Nigel W. Bunnett obtained a PhD degree from the University of Cambridge. After post-doctoral training at the University of California, Los Angeles, he was appointed to a faculty position at the University of Washington. In 1987, Nigel was recruited to the University of California, San Francisco, where remained for 25 years, becoming Vice Chair of Surgery and Professor of Surgery and Physiology. In 2011, Nigel was recruited to Monash University as NHMRC Australia Fellow, Deputy Director of the Monash Institute of Pharmaceutical Science, and Professor of Pharmacology and Medicine. In 2016, Nigel was appointed as the Gerald and Janet Carrus Professor of Surgical Sciences, Vice Chair of Research in Surgery, and Professor of Surgery and Pharmacology at Columbia University in the City of New York. Nigel was appointed Chair of the Department of Basic Science and Craniofacial Biology at New York University in 2019. The Department was renamed the Department of Molecular Pathobiology in February 2020.

Nigel's laboratory studies the mechanisms and treatment of chronic pain. His research has been reported in >350 papers, reviews and chapters, has been cited >32,000 times, and is funded by the NIH, DoD, NHMRC, ARC, and the pharmaceutical industry. His contributions have been recognized by awards including: Australia Fellowship, NIH MERIT Award, Novartis Neurogastroenterology Award, Jansen Award for Basic Research in Gastroenterology, Victor Mutt Award for Research in Regulatory Peptides, Research Mentor Award, American Gastroenterology Association. Throughout his career, Nigel has been committed to graduate and post-graduate education, and he has received numerous awards in recognition of his dedication to teaching and mentorship.
