NYU Oral Cancer Center

Director's Message

Brian L. Schmidt, DDS, MD, PhD
We are uniquely positioned to treat patients with oral cancer and to pioneer research to treat this disease.

I founded the NYU Oral Cancer Center (NYUOCC) in 2013 to improve medical care for oral cancer patients. We are uniquely positioned to treat patients with oral cancer and to pioneer research to treat this disease. Our clinical care is second to none, and we undertake meticulously designed clinical and translational oral cancer research. We investigate therapies and diagnostic methods for oral cancer and we also study oral cancer symptoms including pain. Our center at NYU Dentistry attracts researchers and clinical experts in cancer biology, oncology, pain neuroscience and genomics. In previous oral cancer studies, we established gene-targeted strategies for pain relief and identified biomarkers of oral cancer metastasis. NYUOCC researchers have recently identified cancer-secreted pain mediators that might also regulate oral cancer growth. We seek to manipulate the action of these mediators to improve oral cancer treatment. Our commitment to patients with oral cancer remains focused and unwavering.
