Beyond Borders: The NYU Dental Hygiene Global Network
The Department of Dental Hygiene & Dental Assisting has expanded its reach — educating oral health professionals around the world via Beyond Borders: The NYU Dental Hygiene Global Network. Programs are customizable to meet the needs of the participants and can be conducted on campus at NYU Dentistry, virtually, or in-person globally. Participants will receive innovative and inspired education from expert faculty and will gain the knowledge, skills and confidence to improve the oral health care they are providing to the communities they serve.

Evidence-based Techniques, Strategies, and Technology Currently Used in Preventive Dentistry: September 2024
As part of Beyond Borders: The NYU Dental Hygiene Global Network, the Department of Dental Hygiene & Dental Assisting hosted a two-day continuing education program for 22 Japanese dentists and dental hygienists on September 19 and 20, 2024, titled “Evidence-based Techniques, Strategies, and Technology Currently Used in Preventive Dentistry.” Topics included Motivational Interviewing, Dental Practice Management of Patients with Disabilities, Oral Hygiene and Dental Prosthetics, and hands-on workshops on Advanced Periodontal Instrumentation and Subgingival Air Polishing.
A continued collaboration between the Department and Dr. Hisashi Yonemoto and NYU Dental Hygiene Program alumna Ms. Naoko Fujimori, this program is slated to be an annual offering at the College, with additional CE events in Tokyo, Japan, every other year.
Beyond Borders in Tokyo, Japan: July 2024
Professors Dianne Sefo, clinical associate professor and chair of the Department of Dental Hygiene & Dental Assisting, and Lisa Stefanou, clinical associate professor of dental hygiene & dental assisting, were invited to speak at Nippon Dental University in Tokyo, Japan on July 14th. The all-day continuing education event included "Current Concepts in Dental Implant Maintenance," presented by Professor Sefo, and "Successful Approaches to Treating Dry Mouth/ Xerostomia,” presented by Professor Stefanou. Over 90 dental hygienists and dentists attended the program, which was another collaboration between the Department of Dental Hygiene & Dental Assisting, Dr. Hisashi Yonemoto, and NYU Dental Hygiene Program alumna Ms. Naoko Fujimori.
Inaugural Dental Hygiene Continuing Education Program for Japanese Dentists and Dental Hygienists Debuts
The Department of Dental Hygiene & Dental Assisting hosted a two-day inaugural continuing education program for 20 Japanese dentists and dental hygienists on June 8 and 9, 2023. Initially, the program was intended for dental hygienists, but interested dentists also participated. The program theme was “Evidence-based Techniques, Strategies, and Technology Currently Used in Preventive Dentistry.” Topics included Motivational Interviewing, Dental Practice Management of Patients with Disabilities, Oral Hygiene and Dental Prosthetics, and a hands-on workshop on Advanced Periodontal Instrumentation. Participants said they felt they gained the knowledge, skills, and confidence to help expand oral health equity for their communities.
The program was a collaboration with the Department of Dental Hygiene and Dental Assisting and Dr. Hisashi Yonemoto and NYU Dental Hygiene Program alumna Ms. Naoko Fujimori. This event will be an annual offering at NYU Dentistry and additional CE events in Tokyo, Japan every other year.
