Research Interests / Professional Overview

My basic science research involves investigation of the capacity for the central nervous system to undergo functional and anatomical changes in response to changes in sensory experience, such as following nerve injury, sensory deprivation, and sensory enrichment. I am also interested in exploring intervention strategies which maximize physiological and functional recovery following neural injury. These "plasticity" phenomena have been studied in the rat trigeminal somatosensory system.

Current major efforts are focused on developing (1) clinical research programs which explore the neurophysiology and psychophysical aspects of chronic human pain and intervention strategies to prevent or relieve that pain [This research activity is closely related to my clinical interest in the patient with persistent trigeminal sensory disorders or pain- particularly the role of the nervous system in the initiation and/or maintenance of chronic neuropathic and musculoskeletal pain and (2) conducting pivotal research to develop and evaluate current and emerging diagnostic technologies leading to early detection of oral cancer.

Other research activities focus on basic and clinical investigations related to oral mucosal, salivary gland disorders, and microbiology. This work includes the development of an improved animal model to study radiation-induced salivary gland injury and radioprotection, pharmaceutical / clinical drug trials, immune-mediated salivary gland disease, and oral clinico-pathologic correlates of disease in HIV infection and AIDS.
