Research Interests / Professional Overview

Dr. Ilser Turkyilmaz obtained his dental degree from Hacettepe University, Ankara, Turkey in 1998. Immediately after graduation, he started his PhD program in the Department of Prosthodontics, Hacettepe University. He completed that program in 2004 and kept working as an instructor in the same department. Dr. Turkyilmaz then was invited by Goteborg University, Goteborg, Sweden, for research collaborations. He worked in the Department of Biomaterials, Institute of Clinical Sciences, Sahlgrenska Academy, Goteborg University, Goteborg, Sweden in 2005. He was accepted for an implant prosthodontic fellowship program in the Department of Restorative and Prosthetic Dentistry, The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio, and worked in that university as an Implant Fellow from 06/2007 to 10/2008. He took a full-time position as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Prosthodontics at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, Texas, on November 1, 2008. Dr. Turkyilmaz maintained a private practice in the school‘s faculty practice specializing in implants and fixed and removable prosthodontics.

Dr. Turkyilmaz is particularly interested in dental implant studies regarding early/immediate loading protocols, implant stability measurements using resonance frequency analysis, bone density evaluations using computerized tomography (CT), flapless implant surgeries using CT-generated surgical guides, the biomechanical aspects of implants, and digital dentistry. He has currently 95 scientific articles published in peer-reviewed international journals. He has written four book chapters and edited three books regarding dental implants. He has also given lectures including dental implants at local, national and international meetings. He is currently serving as the Associate Editor for the Journal of Contemporary Dental Practice, an Editorial Board member for the Journal of Clinical Implant Dentistry and Related Research, Journal of Implant and Advanced Clinical Dentistry, and also a reviewer for several journals. Dr. Turkyilmaz earned Diplomate status within the International Congress of Oral Implantologists in 2011, which is the highest honor showing efforts in education, research and actual clinical experience with dental implants. He has served as the Director of Dental School Implant Clinic from 07/2011 to 6/2014. He is currently an active member in the Academy of Osseointegration and the International Association of Dental Research (IADR). Also, Dr. Turkyilmaz is currently one of the Standing Committee members in the Implant Research Group of the IADR. He started his 2-year long Advanced Standing Program at Boston University, Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine in 7/2014 and earned a DMD degree on 9/25/2016.

He started working as a Clinical Associate Professor at the Department of Prosthodontics, New York University College of Dentistry on 8/1/2016. Dr. Turkyilmaz was inducted into the Omega Chapter of Omicron Kappa Upsilon (OKU), National Dental Honor Society, at New York University College of Dentistry on 5/7/2020. Only faculty members, who have made outstanding contributions to the art, science, or literature of dentistry, are inducted into the Omega Chapter of OKU. After a rigorous review process.

After a rigorous review process, Dr. Turkyilmaz was promoted from Clinical Associate Professor to Clinical Professor in the Department of Prosthodontics at New York University College of Dentistry on 9/1/2020. He has been named as the Prosthodontics DDS Digital Dentistry Coordinator on 10/1/2020. His responsibilities include DDS faculty training, communication and integration with laboratories, and incorporating digital prosthodontics within the existing didactic curriculum. He is currently licensed to practice in New York, New Jersey, and Massachusetts. Dr. Turkyilmaz is working part-time at a private practice in Manhattan.
