Dr. Sonal S. Shah grew up in Houston, Texas and completed her college education at the University of Texas at Austin, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in molecular biology and genetics. She then obtained her dental degree from the University of Texas at Houston School of Dentistry. Upon graduation, she decided to pursue the specialty of oral and maxillofacial pathology and oral medicine since she always had an interest in diseases, tumors, and cancers.

After a 3-year course of study at New York Hospital Queens in Flushing, New York, she obtained a specialty certificate in oral and maxillofacial pathology and became board certified by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology. Dr. Shah then completed another one-year general practice residency at Wyckoff Heights Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York for additional clinical experience. She then joined New York University College of Dentistry as a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, Radiology, and Oral Medicine in 2007 until the present. In her current position, Dr. Shah diagnoses and treats many patients in the oral mucosal lesions clinic including performing biopsies, analyzes and diagnoses microscopic slides of biopsy specimens from the school and the tri-state area, and teaches and directs several courses for dental students, dental hygiene students and residents. She also has participated in several clinical research projects and has published several papers in reputable academic journals. Dr. Shah also lectures and consults at meetings and several area hospitals including Lutheran Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York. She has also presented posters at several national meetings.

On a more personal level, Dr. Shah is a busy, active mother of 2 children: a 6-year-old daughter and a 9-year-old son. She enjoys reading, traveling, playing poker and spending time with her husband and children. She is also a lover of music and is learning to play piano and violin with her children.
