Shortcuts in Esthetic Dentistry

Ronaldo Hirata, PhD

Professor Hirata is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biomaterials at NYU College of Dentistry. Professor Hirata also has a private dental clinic in Curitiba, Brazil, which focuses on Esthetic Dentistry. He is the coordinator of several post-grad programs with a focus on Esthetic and Restorative Dentistry in Brazil and lectures extensively on Esthetic Restorations in the US, in Europe, and in the Latin American countries.

Shortcuts

Available in English, the Shortcuts Book is an extremely clinical book that points out problems and doubts as well as solutions. With step-by-step esthetic restorative procedures, it describes "recipes" in each clinical situation.

For each solution offered, the scientific basis and research data are pointed out in a specific part called "Why?", a guide based on science that encompasses the following questions "When to do it?", "How to do?", "Why to do it?", and "How to do it more simply?" in esthetic restorative procedures.

This clinically driven text focuses on the difficulties of esthetic restorative dentistry with the aim of revealing simple and practical solutions to common questions and problems. Each chapter is organized into a series of questions the reader may have; the book then answers these questions in detail using scientific evidence and case presentations. The author presents streamlined procedures step-by-step and provides numerous tips on how to implement the concepts described. Restoration strategies include guidance on recontouring, stratification schemes, layering techniques, characterization, occlusal concepts, and more. Accessible and minimalist in its approach, this deceptively thorough book demystifies contemporary esthetic dentistry and outlines simple and effective solutions for clinical practice. Clinicians will find themselves referring back to this text long after the first read-through for quick, easy-to-find answers and solutions to some of esthetic dentistry's most common problems.

Chapter 1 - Bleaching
Dental bleaching: concepts and bleaching substances

The introductory chapter discusses the principles that guide the approach to tooth whitening. Products used for this purpose, both for office use and for home use, are described both in their chemistry and in their technique of use.

Chapter 2 - Defining
Composite resins and adhesive systems: the material

In this chapter, composite materials and adhesive systems are addressed under the science of biomaterials. Properties, composition, clinical application, and classification are described. A protocol of use, as well as an indication of the different materials is proposed.

Chapter 3 - Restoring
Esthetic restorations and anterior makeovers

All types of anterior restorations are presented, with a general rule for restoration and a clear step-by-step procedure. Situations of esthetic changes such as diastema closure, increase of anterior guides, dental transformation, among others, are also approached, with a clinical step-by-step approach for each situation found.

Chapter 4 - Filling
Esthetic restorations and sculpture in posterior teeth

Chapter 4 describes the use of posterior composite teeth, details of reconstruction of proximal and occlusal boxes, and finishing and polishing steps. This chapter contains a discussion of science trends for posterior composite, including bulk fill resins.

Chapter 5 - Bonding
Inlays and onlays: partial restorations in composites and ceramics

Inlays and onlays made with different materials are the focus of Chapter 5. Steps from preparation to adhesive cementation as well as selection of restorative technique and material are addressed, along with ways to simplify technique, including direct/indirect technique point out solutions.
