Principal Investigators

Dr. Yvonne Buischi is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Periodontology and Implant Dentistry at New York University College of Dentistry, New York. She has obtained a Doctor of Dental Surgery (D.D.S.) degree from the University of Sao Paulo, a Periodontics Specialty Certificate from the University of Campinas, and Doctorate of Science degree in Oral Biochemistry (University of Sao Paulo). Born in Brazil, Dr. Buischi has worked extensively abroad - she is a former Associate Professor at the Preventive Dental Health Center, Karlstad, Sweden and Interim Director to The World Health Organization (WHO) Oral Health Program, Geneva. Dr. Buischi has published numerous papers in peer reviewed journals, authored 3 books and contributions to at least 6 book chapters, as well as delivered over 200 presentations in international meetings and universities abroad. Dr.Buischi's global work includes research collaborations in Scandinavia, Japan, Brazil and Kenya. Her research interests are among others, global health, behavioral changes in oral health thought educational evidence-based interventions and the link between general and oral health. Working with girls of poverty in rural East Africa is her main passion. Her research has been funded by the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development – CNPq (Brazil), the National Institutes of Health and others.

   

Dr. Peter Loomer is a Clinical Professor and the Chairman of the Department of Periodontology and Implant Dentistry at New York University College of Dentistry. He also serves as the founding Director of the NYU Center for Global Oral Health and is affiliated faculty in the New York University College of Global Public Health. He is a graduate of the University of Toronto where he obtained his BSc, DDS, PhD (Biochemistry) and dentistry specialty training in Periodontics. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology and the Royal College of Dentists of Canada, Fellow of the American College of Dentists and New York Academy of Medicine. Over the past 25 years, he has studied the microbiology of periodontal diseases, more recently focusing on the influence alternate tobacco forms on the oral microbiome. Dr. Loomer is an expert in health professions curriculum, which has been a major focus of his international research program. His work in global oral health is focused on improving the healthcare workforce and improving the oral health of underserved populations in developing nations with an emphasis on East and West Africa, the gulf states of the middle east, and Latin America. His research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health, Fogarty International, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and others.
