Professional Background

After attending Fordham University Dr. De Steno received his DMD degree from the New Jersey College of Dentistry in 1969. In 1973 he received his Certificate in Prosthodontics from the University of Alabama Graduate Dental School and earned a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Physiology and Biophysics from the University of Alabama Graduate Medical School. Dr. De Steno began his academic career at the University of Alabama Dental School as a Clinical Instructor in 1969. In 1973 he joined the ranks of the UMDNJ-New Jersey Dental School faculty as Assistant Professor in the Departments of Prosthodontics and Oral Biology.

From 1973 to 2000 Dr. De Steno was in the private practice of Prosthodontics in Ridgewood, New Jersey. In 1999 Dr. De Steno assumed a significant administrative role in UMDNJ-New Jersey Dental School as Chief Operationing Officer for the NJDS-Center for Dental and Oral Health and the Dental Implant Center. In 2000 Dr. De Steno became the Associate Dean for the Office for Interdisciplinary and Extramural Programs and Professor in the Department of Restorative Dentistry. In 2001, the offices of Interdisciplinary and Extramural Programs and Office for Clinical Affairs were consolidated and Dr. De Steno assumed the role of Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs. He has also held the positions of Associate Dean for Extramural Affairs and Vice Dean.

Dr. De Steno is nationally recognized as an expert in the field of Prosthodontics, Implantology and Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction. He has provided national leadership to the dental profession in the specialty of Prosthodontics while contributing to the ongoing development of the UMDNJ-New Jersey Dental School. Dr. De Steno is known for his ability to manage and has contributed to many creative and innovative programs throughout UMDNJ-New Jersey Dental School and the profession of dentistry.

Dr. De Steno is also responsible for developing and publishing the Official Journal of the American College of Prosthodontists, the Journal of Prosthodontics. He has published numerous professional articles and contributed to textbooks in Prosthodontics and Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction.

Currently, Dr. De Steno is Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs at New York University College of Dentistry, a position he has held since December of 2007.
