The NYU Dentistry Student Leadership Track

Exploring Leadership through Theory and Practice

The Office of Student Affairs & Academic Support Services is dedicated to providing students at the NYU College of Dentistry with intensive leadership training through a series of interactive workshops called The NYU Dentistry Student Leadership Track.

This program seeks to equip dental students with the skills, tools, and leadership capacities to effectively lead their peers today, and the dental community into the future.

Deriving from the Leadership Capacities and Competencies developed by the NYU Leadership Initiative, the NYU Dentistry Student Leadership Track will provide students the opportunity to explore personal strengths, think critically about how to lead others, develop techniques to facilitate interpersonal collaboration, and proactively envision and articulate a new future for the dentistry profession.

The NYU Dentistry Student Leadership Track culminates in an opportunity for students to apply for the three-day off-site Leadership Retreat focused on advanced leadership theory and application. This leadership intensive challenges students through individual reflection and explores the impacts of leadership on the dentistry profession.

Spring 2016 Theme: Innovative Leadership

This semester in the NYU Dentistry Student Leadership Track we will explore the theme of Innovative Leadership. What does it take to become an innovative leader? What skills should an innovative leader possess? We believe at the core of an innovative leader is the ability to think differently. An innovative leader embraces change, practices self-reflection, and sees the world through an optimistic eye. Our sessions this semester will explore four topics, all with the goal to reframe your mindset and support your pursuit of Innovative Leadership:

An Introduction to Innovation Leadership

Wednesday, February 10th at 4:00 pm – 433 First Avenue, room 220

Presentation by: Selena Drobnick, Program Coordinator, Student Life & Leadership Initiatives, NYU College of Dentistry

This introductory lecture will explore the basic principles of Innovative Leadership and provide the strong foundational groundwork students can use to approach the other workshops this semester. This session will also explore the NYU Dentistry/Colgate-Palmolive Student Leadership Retreat and allow students to ask any questions they might have about the application process.

The Art of Negotiation

February 18th at 4:00 pm – 433 First Avenue, room 230

Presentation by: Michael O’Connor, Executive Vice Dean for Finance & Administration, NYU College of Dentistry

Negotiation is an art, a critical process and creative endeavor to move all invested stakeholders and parties to a common compromise. In this workshop, Dean O’Connor will discuss his experience as a Dean and negotiator, and share an interactive exercise that illuminates the art of negotiation.

Personal Branding

Wednesday, March 9th at 1:00 pm – 433 First Avenue, room 262

Monday, April 25th at 1:00 pm – 433 First Avenue, room 262

Presented by: Selena Drobnick. Program Coordinator, Student Life & Leadership Initiatives, NYU Dentistry; and Jean Giordano, Director, Communications & Public Affairs, NYU Dentistry

For too long branding has been a term reserved for powerful companies and products; however, in embarking on a career in dentistry, one must understand their place as the product. Personal branding is the practice of applying marketing techniques to self-improvement and self-packaging. This workshop will walk students through successful branding campaigns and allow for an introspective work session to find your own personal brand.

Design Thinking

Tuesday, March 22nd at 4:00 pm – 433 First Avenue, room 262

Presentation by: Anne-Laure Fayard, Associate Professor of Management
Department of Technology Management and Innovation, NYU Tandon School of Engineering

Many leaders identify a problem and set out to fix it. They narrow their minds and target one particular issue, looking for one singular solution. What if there was a way to adjust your mind to look for ANY solution to ANY issue? Design Thinking is the strategic process of problem solving upheld by the principles of empathy and creativity. Intrigued? Sign up for this interactive workshop with the esteemed Dr. Anne-Laure Fayard of the NYU Tandon School of Engineering to discover what Design Thinking is all about.

The Psychology of Success: Growth Mindset vs. Fixed Mindset

Wednesday, April 13th at 4:00 pm – 433 First Avenue, room 202

Presented by: Selena Drobnick, Program Coordinator, Student Life & Leadership Initiatives, NYU College of Dentistry

Drawn from the work of Carol D. Dweck, PhD, and her publication "Mindset: The New Psychology of Success"

Positivity and a persistence to grow can allow an individual to attain goals they never thought they would reach. In this workshop, we will explore the teaching of Dr. Carol D. Dweck and her studies on the difference between the "Growth Mindset" and the "Fixed Mindset." This interactive experience will teach students the pillars of a growth mindset, learn the language of success and failure, and gain practical skills in allowing both you, and your patients, to unlock your full potential.
