Spring 2020 LEADERSHIP TRACK:

Leadership Keynote Lectures

This semester the NYU Dentistry Student Leadership Track will explore the power of understanding a leaders' narrative. Leadership within a group or organization can often mean taking charge, but that sense of responsibility can overwhelm a leader who hasn’t done the self-reflection to understand how they achieved their leadership role. This semester, we will be interviewing a number of inspiring leaders here at the College of Dentistry, delving into their leadership pillars that they discovered through their own personal and professional journey.

Lessons in Leadership

Richard Valachovic

Presented by Dr. Richard Valachovic

Dr. Richard W. Valachovic is President emeritus of the American Dental Education Association (ADEA). He served as President and CEO of ADEA from 1997-2019. Dr. Valachovic is currently a visiting scholar at NYU College of Dentistry. Dr. Valachovic received a B.S. degree from St. Lawrence University, the D.M.D. degree from the University of Connecticut, and the M.P.H. and Sc.M. (Health Policy and Management) degrees from the Harvard School of Public Health. He completed postdoctoral education and residency training in dental public health and pediatric dentistry at Harvard University and the Children’s Hospital Medical Center in Boston and is a board certified oral and maxillofacial radiologist.

Through presentation and interview, Dr. Valachovic will delve into his personal leadership pillars that he discovered through his own personal and professional journey during his education and while serving as chief executive officer of ADEA for 22 years.


The Person you mean to be

Dolly Chugh

Presented by Dr. Dolly Chugh

New York University business school professor and TED Speaker (top 25 talk of 2018), Dr. Dolly Chugh, brings her acclaimed book to life through her award-winning teaching style. Weaving together stories and science, Dr. Chugh illuminates the “psychology of good people”. Her emphasis will be on unconscious and systemic bias, key topics covered in The Person You Mean to Be: How Good People Fight Bias. In this entertaining and thought-provoking session, Dr. Chugh offers a sometimes surprising path towards building a more inclusive community. This interactive session will be a mix of fun activities, videos, and mini-lectures with clear takeaways.


Lessons in Leadership

Dr. André Ritter

Presented by Dr. André Ritter

Dr. André Ritter joined the NYU College of Dentistry as the chair of the Department of Cariology and Comprehensive Care, in late 2019. Dr. Ritter joined the college from University of North Carolina (UNC) Adams School of Dentistry where he served as a dean, COO, and professor. Born and raised in southern Brazil, Dr. Ritter attended dental school in Florianópolis in the state of Santa Catarina. There, he practiced and taught part-time for 10 years, before moving to Chapel Hill in 1997 to enroll in the UNC School of Dentistry’s Operative Dentistry Graduate Program.

Through presentation and interview, Dr. Ritter will delve into his personal leadership pillars that he discovered through his own personal and professional journey during his life, education, research, and teaching. This presentation will give students a chance to get to know Dr. Ritter in a setting outside of his current role and truly understand what motivates him as a leader and professional.


Leadership in the Dental Profession

Richard Valachovic

Presented by Dr. Richard Valachovic

As a follow up to his presentation in February, President emeritus of ADEA, Dr. Richard Valachovic will explore the specific leadership practices he believes lead to a successful career in dentistry. Not all leadership lessons are taught as part of the dental curriculum. Many lessons have to be learned outside of the classroom. Dr. Valachovic believes leadership should be a more integral part of dental education. Practicing dentists will be expected to hold leadership positions in their communities and Dr. Valachovic wants to make sure new dentists are ready to step up to that challenge.
