Research Interests / Professional Overview

Dr. Young K. Kim is recognized as an academician, clinician, and innovator. As a Diplomate in the American Board of Prosthodontics and a Fellow in the American College of Prosthodontists, Dr. Kim has concurrently held the position of Clinical Assistant Professor at New York University College of Dentistry, Department of Prosthodontics, while actively maintaining a private practice in Manhattan. His primary clinical focus involves the treatment of complex cases related to both tooth-supported and implant-supported full-mouth rehabilitation.

Dr. Kim, a graduate with a Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) from Boston University School of Dental Medicine, achieved the distinguished position of first rank in his final year (GPA 3.99). Subsequently, he pursued further academic endeavors, earning a Doctor of Medical Sciences (DMSc) and a Certificate in Prosthodontics from Harvard School of Dental Medicine, where he was recognized as a President's scholar. His groundbreaking work in tissue engineering at MIT/Harvard Medical School, specifically the development of an inaugural injectable bone graft material, gelatin-hyaluronan-calcium phosphate (GH-CP), through a needle orifice for flapless guided bone regeneration, earned him the first-place award at the regional American College of Prosthodontists annual session in 2019. Dr. Kim also participated in an inaugural institutional research project with Tetranite® - a new bone-adhesive and bioactive calcium phosphate cement, referred to as 'bone glue.' This project involved an NIH proposal and pilot rabbit studies and is currently being pursued for NASA's research in the international space station and SpaceX, as well as FDA approval for a clinical trial in implant dentistry with RevBio in Boston, MA.

In addition to his academic commitments, Dr. Kim has been involved in the field of surgical navigation and robotics for minimally invasive surgery. He participated as a co-founder and Chief Science Officer (CSO) for Zeta Surgical in Boston, MA, a venture that emerged from the Harvard Innovation Lab, developing the next-generation surgical navigation and robotics using mixed reality technology. Currently, Zeta Surgical has secured $5.4M in funding and obtained FDA approval for its innovative neurosurgical device.

With numerous publications and patent applications to his credit, Dr. Kim actively participates as a reviewer for several journals such as "Dentistry Review (Elsevier)," "BMC Oral Health," "Scientific Reports (Nature Portfolio)," and "Journal of Prosthodontics."

In his editorial capacity, he co-led and edited the NYU implant project in 2020/21, resulting in the publication of the new NYU implant restorative manual, which has been disseminated to 12 countries, 13 states, and 27 institutions. Presently, he serves as a co-leader/editor of the YOMI robotic surgical project at NYUCD, pioneering the establishment of the first predoctoral robotic implant surgical curriculum in the United States.

Recognizing his exceptional contributions, Dr. Kim was honored as the inaugural recipient of the "Rising Faculty Award" by the NYU Academy of Distinguished Educators in September 2021. In 2022, he was nominated as an associate member of the prestigious dental society, the American Academy of Esthetic Dentistry. Further underscoring his accomplishments, Dr. Kim received the '6 under 10' Emerging Leaders Prize from the Academy of Osseointegration in 2023.

Currently, Dr. Kim serves as a guest editor for Dentistry Review (Elsevier), overseeing a special edition issue on "Surgical Prosthodontics – What, When, and How." As an originator of the innovative geometric concept in implant dentistry - “prosthesis-implant arch area ratio (PIAAR)” - his current research project, titled "auto-distribution of implant fixtures (ADIF) for computer-guided implant surgery software," involves the development of a plug-in module platform using advanced artificial intelligence (AI)-based tools, collaborating with NYU's AI for Scientific Research (AIfSR) and Tandon School of Engineering. His multifaceted academic, clinical, and innovative expertise converge within the field of surgical and reconstructive Prosthodontics.
